Two Workshops led by S*Marts Consulting Founder Sherry Marts

The workshop is being cosponsored by the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and Women in Science at Columbia (WISC).

#1) Step Up: Build Confidence and Get Comfortable with Self-Promotion

The workshop will focus on how trainees can develop and enhance their self-confidence, overcome impostor syndrome, and change limiting beliefs. The workshop will also cover how trainees can use self-promotion as a part of a strategy for achieving their personal mission as well as how trainees can uncover and get over internalized taboos and prohibitions against self-promotion.
#2) Just Say No: How to Reduce Stress, Create Ease, and Still Get It All Done

Date: Friday, May 8th 2015

The workshop will focus on the basics of how trainees can begin reducing stress, including how one can give up on work-life balance and go for overall satisfaction instead. The workshop will delve into how one can get over the “shoulds,” figure out what they really want, and reveal their authentic self. Trainees will learn how to say “No” to what they don’t want, say “Yes” to what they do want, and give up being “nice” in favor of being kind (to others and to themselves). The workshop will also discuss the formula for effective communication: simple, clear, honest, and direct.

The workshops will be led by Sherry A. Marts, Ph.D., the CEO of S*Marts Consulting, LLC. Sherry received her B.Sc. (Hons.) in Applied Biology from the University of Hertfordshire, and her Ph.D. in Physiology from Duke University. She has a wide-ranging background in biomedical research, regulatory affairs, nonprofit management, public education, and advocacy. Through S*Marts Consulting, she offers executive and career coaching with an emphasis on career and leadership development for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Dr. Marts is an experienced mentor, a Radical Honesty™ coach, and meditation teacher. She is co-author (with Raven Dana) of The Book of How: Creating the Life You Want. She is an expert speaker and workshop leader with a lively personality and sense of humor.

Madeleine Jacobs: Ten Lessons Learned From a Lifetime of Science

WISC is pleased to announce that we are hosting Madeleine Jacobs, current President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents, formerly Executive Director/CEO of the American Chemical Society, for a lecture on science culture with Q&A to follow.

Drawing on nearly 45 years as a communicator of science and chemistry, Madeleine Jacobs describes what she has learned about work and life. This talk is about how to build a satisfying career while balancing a demanding professional life with a personal life and staying true to one’s core values. Be prepared to nod with recognition, laugh, and even cry, from her first tip, “Never do anything just to please your mother,” to Lesson Number 10, “Experiment!”

Abbreviated Jacobs Biography: 

Madeleine Jacobs has been Executive Director and CEO of the American Chemical Society since 2004. The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific society, with more than 161,000 members worldwide. Jacobs served for 10 years as Managing Editor (1993-95) and Editor-in-Chief (1995-2003) of ACS’s weekly newsmagazine, Chemical and Engineering News (C&EN), where she also worked early in her career (1969-72).  She has also worked at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (1972-74), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (1974-79), and the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum complex, where she was chief science writer (1979-87) and director of the Office of Public Affairs (1987-93).

Jacobs received a B.S. in chemistry with honors and distinction from George Washington University in 1968. She completed a year of graduate study in organic chemistry at the University of Maryland in 1969.

Jacobs has received a number of awards, including the New York Academy of Sciences Women’s History Month Award (2002), the ACS Award for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences (2003), the American Crystallographic Association Public Service Award (2004), and the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) President’s Award (2010). She was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2004. In 2012, Jacobs was chosen as one of 100 Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) by STEMconnector™.

Jacobs retired in mid-February 2015 from ACS. She became the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents on March 1, 2015.

Join us for our Career Panel Discussion: Getting into and Succeeding in the Computer Science Industry. Our panelists are currently working at top companies in the pharmaceutical, financial, and tech industries. They will be talking about their perspective on the field, their work environments, and the products they are developing.  We will also discuss industry directions and what it takes to become a competitive applicant. The event is open to all students who are interested in the computer science industry.

Gloria Yuan: Software engineer at Google NYC
Gloria is currently a software engineer at the Google NYC office. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science in 2012, and has been working at Google for 2.5 years. Her product area is Display Ads, specifically the DoubleClick for Publishers product. DFP is an ad trafficking and serving platform that brings publishers valuable ad revenue to keep their business running.

Jiyang Ju, PhD: Senior Scientist at Pfizer
Dr. Yu received his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Zhejiang University, China in 2006. In 2008, he started his PhD in Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University. He then joined Califano lab for his dissertation and received the PhD degree in 2012. His thesis work was on integrating systems biology and functional genomics to identify drivers and therapeutic targets of human cancers. His PhD work was published in top journals such as Cancer Cell. Right after his PhD, he joined the computational biology group at Pfizer Oncology as a senior scientist. His current work at Pfizer is to develop software and algorithms to analyze functional genomics NGS data and to integrate with large-scaled genetic/genomic data for pharmacological target identification of human tumors.

Yuan Du: Software Engineer at Facebook
Yuan is a software engineer in Facebook. She graduated from Columbia University in Dec 2012 and got her master degree in CS major. She has worked at Facebook New York office for almost two years since then. She worked on web development in last year and now she is focusing on Android app development.

Mia (Mi) Zhou: Software Engineer at Bank of America
Mia is currently working in Bank of America, Merrill Lynch. Her team is called Quartz Core, which is known as an integrated platform for both Global Market trading and risk management, from front to back, across all financial assets. Before that she enrolled in Barclays’ technology rotation program for one and half year, working in Rates, Prime Service and Mortgage Securities. In addition to the financial industry working experience, Mia did a summer internship in the Bing Search team in Microsoft. She got a master degree in Computer Science from Columbia University.
