WISC STEMinar: Children's and adults' understanding of the criminal justice

The criminal justice system affects the lives of millions of people in the United States, but it is unclear how people reason about it. In this STEMinar, we will discover how people's ideas about why people come in contact with the criminal justice system change between childhood and adulthood. Moreover, we will discuss the social implications of people's ideas about the causes of justice system contact.

Content is geared toward high school level science background and events are open to all ages and always free! Register for Zoom link!

WISC STEMinars: The sights, sounds, and feelings of music

Music enjoys a peculiar role in our lives in that it manages to make us feel and remember things without having to convey any tangible information. But what allows it to do that? What is music in the outside world before it reaches our ears, and how do our brains transform it into something meaningful to us? In this STEMinar, we'll talk about how instruments turn finger plucks into sound, how our ears decode that sound, and evidence from ancient peoples as to why this process means so much to us.

Content is geared toward high school level science background and events are open to all ages and always free! Register for Zoom link!

WISC STEMinars: How the brain supports memory

Memory is a foundational ability that allows us to reflect on past experiences, access stored information, and guide our future actions and behaviors. This STEMinar will focus on the basics of brain imaging techniques and also how to apply them to the study of human memory.

Content is geared toward curious high school and middle school students, but all are welcome! All events are free.

STEMinars: Mitochondria on the Move!

Mitochondria are the essential organelle that make the energy needed for cells. Mitochondria are motile and move throughout the cell so that the right energy production is at the right place in the cell. In this STEMinar we will learn about how mitochondria power some of the most energy hungry cells in the body- the brain cells!

STEMinars: Genetic Engineering

STEMinars: Genetic Engineering

Living things are made up of many, many cells, and these cells have instructions inside them called DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). These instructions include things called "genes" which control the proteins our cells create, and ultimately, control how our cells look and behave! Genetic engineering is a super important development because we can build and alter genes to make cells look and behave in certain ways. Why is this a big deal, and how does this help scientists better understand life? Learn with us and grad student Tyler Perdue at 11am April 10th!

STEMinars: Past, present, and future: How our memories shape our behavior

STEM Starters of WISC (Women in Science at Columbia) hosts a seminar series with Columbia graduate students open to all students

About this Event

The ability to store and encode memories allows us to remember fun experiences with our friends and family, to access stored information so we can do well on tests, and to learn from our past mistakes and struggles. These kinds of memories, called "episodic" memories, are stored through the activity of brain cells, or neurons, in a region of the brain called the hippocampus. In this STEMinar, we will discover how activity of the hippocampus shapes our present actions and future behaviors.

Content is geared toward curious high school and middle school students, but all are welcome! All events are free.
