WISC Undergraduate Mentoring Program

Our program facilitates one-on-one mentorship relationships between

undergraduates and graduate students in STEM, with the goal of helping

undergraduates learn that a career in STEM is within their reach!

Program mission

Our program facilitates one-on-one mentorship relationships between undergraduates and graduate students in STEM, with the goal of helping undergraduates learn that a career in STEM is within their reach! Through creating opportunities for undergraduates to have casual interactions with STEM grad students and connecting students with ongoing research opportunities in their fields, we hope to help demystify academia and scientific careers in general.

We also host events each year to help undergraduates learn more about the STEM graduate school experience. Past events include a “Grad School Q&A with STEM PhD Students” and “Grad School Funding Q&A with STEM PhD students: Fellowships, TAships, and Scholarships.” Our events are always open to students of all gender identities!

What our undergrad mentees are saying:

“[My mentor] has been a great supporter, teacher, mentor, and advisor for me. I have learned so much about preparing for my future career and graduate school. She was always there to help me and give me advice. It was truly an amazing opportunity for me to meet my mentor.”

“I loved that she was so genuine and willing to help me! She gave an honest look at both an MD and what a PhD would be like and was very transparent about the difficulties and rewards for both. I appreciated that she was truly a mentor to me!”

“I really appreciated how much my mentor genuinely wanted to be there to talk to me and get to know me. I am grateful to have her as a resource and feel comfortable reaching out to her even after the formal mentoring program is over.”

“My mentor is the best! She was super willing to field all of my questions, and she was really supportive throughout the semester. I feel like I gained a better understanding of what graduate school is, and I feel motivated to potentially pursue a higher degree. “
